Languages

At Corton Primary School & Nursery, we believe that languages are an essential part of a broad, balanced curriculum. Rooted in our Christian ethos of respect, kindness and integrity, our children understand that languages provide an opportunity to communicate more effectively with others and help children to understand what it is to be a global citizen. This includes the importance of tolerance and understanding, which is crucial knowledge in today’s world.

Curriculum

The curriculum in Key Stage 2 is planned so that careful thought is given to the teaching of French phonics, i.e. focusing on how children should pronounce the sounds and how these are represented in writing. Over time, our children develop their ability to manipulate simple language step by step, undertaking tasks that steadily increase in complexity of simple grammatical concepts.

Our ambitious and motivating French curriculum:

  • Is carefully planned around logical pupil progression in the ‘3 pillars’ of language: phonics, vocabulary, grammar – and the interplay between them.
  • Develops their knowledge of phonics and pronunciation across time.
  • Comprises a range of commonly used words, especially simple and common verbs, which are introduced systematically. These are revisited regularly and in different contexts across the key stage.
  • Has a clear sequence of simple grammar running throughout Key Stage 2 which is revisited regularly and in different contexts.
  • Creates opportunities for pupils to practise using the target language, helping them to remember long term the language structures they need to communicate in an unscripted way.
