Geography
At Corton Primary School & Nursery, our ambitious Geography curriculum will engender the excitement, creativity and critical thinking about the world that will equip our young geographers to make their own way in it. Studying geography is so important for children, regardless of their age or stage of learning. Geography helps them to make sense of the world around them and stimulates their curiosity in places and people, supporting our Christian values of respect, kindness and integrity.
Curriculum
We will deliver a curriculum which is enquiry-led that seeks answers to fundamental questions such as:
- Where is this place?
- What is it like? (and why?)
- How and why is it changing?
- How does this place compare with other places?
- How and why are places connected?
We will also ensure that our geographers do not simply answer questions but have the opportunity to ask and debate them:
- What could/should the world be like in the future?
- What can we do to influence change?
The key concepts of locational knowledge, place knowledge, environmental, physical and human geography knowledge form the foundation of Geography, which is interwoven with the core geographical skills, such as map-reading and interpretation of maps, compass work and interpreting geographical data.
Progression of knowledge
In Nursery and EYFS We enable children to take on the role of a geographer by exploring, discovering and beginning to make sense of the world around them. We provide opportunities for pupils to formulate questions to investigate the similarities and differences that exist and be encouraged to discuss these with interest and sensitivity.
Role-play is crucial in EYFS, as this allows the children to learn experientially about different environments and describe and explain why some things happen the way they do in both the physical and human world.
The Key Stage 1 curriculum is based around the over-arching question of “what, why there, why care?” This ensures that there is always a purpose to the geography the children are engaged in. Geography is taught via a series of enquiry questions, which allows the children to really develop a sense of what Geography is and why it matters. The children not only develop knowledge about where places are, but also develop an understanding of why it matters where those places are. The curriculum is intended to be coherent, challenging, engaging and enjoyable.
In Key Stage 2, the children investigate places from the micro to the macro scale and learn the corresponding features, using maps correctly in order to build upon this knowledge. The children investigate patterns in topography, land use and climate. Fieldwork supports the learning at the micro scale and allows children to discover the key human and physical features of their immediate environment. The children learn that geographical information can be communicated in a variety of ways, such as drama and photographs, as well as more traditional communication techniques such as hand-drawn maps.
